Harnessing extractive industries for sustainable development in the UNECE region  

As we enter the Decade of Action to deliver on the SDGs by 2030, what are the key challenges and contributions of the extractive industries in the UNECE region, which is a major producer and consumer of resources? Could the COVID-19 crisis be harnessed as an opportunity to accelerate a sustainable transformation? This was at the heart of this week’s high-level roundtable convened by the Executive Secretary, which brought together the Deputy Secretary-General and the Secretary General’s Special Envoy on Financing the 2030 Agenda with senior authorities and experts from member States and chairs of UNECE technical committees. Among practical solutions highlighted that could strengthen environmental and social sustainability, including through zero waste and circular economy-based approaches, are practical UNECE tools for resource and environmental management, and for traceability and transparency.
