72nd Commission Session of ESCAP


Heads of government and other high-level officials from around Asia and the Pacific convened in Bangkok over five days for the annual session of the United Nations regional commission, where they debated regional cooperation and integration, and reviewed key challenges to achieving inclusive and sustainable economic and social development.

The 72nd session of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) met from 15 to 19 May.

The Prime Ministers of Fiji and Tajikistan, and the Deputy Prime Minister Tuvalu were among the high-level participants that took part in the session. The Minister of Energy of Thailand, General Anantaporn Kanjanarat addressed the opening of the ministerial segment on 17 May.

Several key ministers were among the speakers at the High-level Dialogue on 17 May that explored advancing regional economic cooperation and integration in Asia and the Pacific.

A ministerial roundtable was held on 18 May with a focus on the theme of the 72nd session, science, technology and innovation for sustainable development.

On 19 May, high-level officials alongside experts from the region joined a panel discussion on the findings of the Economic and Social Survey of Asia and the Pacific 2016, ESCAP’s flagship publication.
